사철채송화 또는 송엽국 이란?

높이 약 20cm이다. 줄기는 밑부분이 나무처럼 단단하고 옆으로 벋으면서 가지가 많이 갈라진다. 잎은 마주나고 두꺼운 육질이며 원통 모양이고 3개의 능선이 있다.

꽃은 4∼6월에 붉은빛을 띤 자주색, 붉은색, 흰색 등으로 무리지어 핀다. 국화같이 생기고 윤이 나며 지름 5cm 정도이다. 꽃받침조각은 5개이고 꽃잎과 수술은 많다.

햇볕이 있을 때 피었다가 저녁에는 오므라든다. 근연종인 람프란투스 아우레움(L. aureum)은 노란색 꽃이 핀다. 남아프리카 원산으로 내한성이 강하며 관상용으로 심는다. 번식은 주로 꺾꽂이로 하며 종자로도 한다.
